Phantom Blade Zero Endings: How Many There Are and How to Get the True Ending

How many endings Phantom Blade Zero has (8 or 2?), what decides the Normal vs True ending, the point-of-no-return warnings to watch for, and whether you can miss it. Story spoilers stay hidden.

Quick answer

A post-launch walkthrough documents two endings: Normal and True. The True ending replaces the Normal one if you finish every purple-icon side quest before the game's cutoff points. The game warns you before each cutoff. Pre-release reports of "eight endings" have not been confirmed in the released game.

This page tells you how the endings work and how not to miss the good one. It doesn't explain what happens in them. Location names that could spoil the late game stay folded until you open them.

How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have?

The answer depends on whose count you go by:

Pre-release reports and Wikipedia's summaryBefore launchEight possible endings
PowerPyx's True Ending walkthroughDay after launchTwo: Normal and True ("Perfect")

The two counts may not contradict each other. "Eight endings" could cover variations that haven't been documented yet, or it may describe an earlier build. What is documented in the released game is a Normal ending by default and a True ending that replaces it when you meet the requirements. We'll update this table as more players finish the game.

What decides your ending?

Side quests. The developer said before launch that completing some side quests "might even open up new story paths," and that's how it works in the released game. According to PowerPyx's playthrough:

  • In the story menu, gold-icon quests are the main story. You'll finish those no matter what.
  • Purple-icon quests are the side stories that count toward the True ending. Finish all of them before the cutoff points.
  • If they're all done when you beat the normal final boss, the True ending replaces the Normal ending.

No dialogue choices or morality meter are documented as affecting the ending. It comes down to finishing the purple quests in time.

Can you miss the True ending?

Yes, but the game warns you. The required quests can't be lost through normal play. You only miss the True ending if you go past a cutoff point with purple quests still unfinished. There are two warnings:

Cutoff warning 1 (late-game location names)Click to reveal

When you enter the Mirage Estate area, the game warns you if required quests are still incomplete. You reach it after unlocking the door in Pangzhen's Green Serpent House.

Cutoff warning 2: the final point of no returnClick to reveal

At the bell called "The Last Chance" in Mount Soulrend, you get a final warning. It appears even if you've finished everything. Past it, you can't leave the final boss area until the ending plays.

Simple rule

When the game says you're about to pass a point of no return, open the story menu and check for unfinished purple quests first.

True ending checklist (spoiler-free)

  1. Talk to the people you meet. Many side stories start from ordinary conversations.
  2. Keep an eye on the story menu. Every purple-icon quest has to be finished.
  3. Don't go past the first warning until the purple list is empty.
  4. At the final warning, double-check one last time. There's no coming back.
  5. Beat the final boss. If the requirements are met, the True ending plays instead of the Normal one.

Missed it? Use New Game Plus

New Game Plus unlocks after the credits and resets quests while keeping your gear. That makes it a quicker second attempt at the True ending. See how NG+ works.

Endings and achievements

According to PowerPyx, if you aim for the True ending you can earn every achievement in one playthrough. The director has said the same. See the full achievement list.
